Armenia’s President Serzh Sarkisian was to face a largely hostile reception later on Tuesday from members of Lebanon’s Armenian community up in arms over Yerevan’s plans to establish ties with Ankara.
Sarkisian’s brief stop in Beirut is part of a week-long international trip aimed at calming concerns among members of the Armenian diaspora over Turkish-Armenian efforts to normalise relations.
But such plans have angered many in Lebanon’s 140,000-strong Armenian community, mostly made up of the descendants of survivors of massacres in eastern Anatolia under Ottoman rule almost a century ago.
After the Minsk Group Co-chairs meet with Azerbaijani officials in Baku today, Yuri Marzlyakov stated that, President Aliyev consented to meet with his Armenian counterpart on October 8 in Chisinau, Moldova.

A heated debate between Armenian Republican Party member Karen Avagyan and Heritage Party representative Stepan Safaryan, regarding President Sargsyan’s tour of the diaspora took place today.
Mr. Avagyan stated that most of the protests that President Sargsyan has so far encountered on his trip haven’t been sincere given that many of the participants aren’t even informed about the facts contained in the Armenian-Turkish protocols. “They have received distorted information and believe rumors of treason, etc. How can people carry out protests when they aren’t informed of the facts?” »»»»»

A young journalist from Armenia has won the Press Freedom Award by a jury of the Austrian branch of the Reporters Without Borders organization. Marianna Grigoryan won the prestigious award from a pool of contestants from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
Rubina Mohring, President of the Austrian branch of Reporters Without Borders, noted that the 12,000 Euro prize aims to foster the comprehension of the importance of democracy and encourage journalists to continue theur work in the name of human rights and freedom of the press. »»»»»
