Hrant Dink Murder Suspects Acknowledge Weapon Used

13_10-dink“I was going to kill a man. I was not going to a wedding ceremony.” Thus was the statement of Ogün Samast, the confessed murderer of Hrant Dink, when he saw the gun presented before them during the 11th trial of the case yesterday in an Istanbul Court.Yasin Hayal, charged as a co-conspirator in the murder case also said, “I acknowledge 100 percent that this is the gun.”

Later Samast took the gun and looked at it. Samast said the gun he used in the murder had had a problem in its safety lock and that the gun he was holding in the courthouse had a similar problem. “It was this gun,” he said,

LA Times – “The two countries must get beyond the 1915-1918 genocide because it’s in both of their interests”

The following is an editorial that appeared in today’s edition of the Los Angeles Times.

More than a million Armenians were massacred in the final years of the Ottoman Empire, from 1915 to 1918. This bloody chapter of World War I should be recognized as genocide and remembered, not only to honor the victims but for its lessons to future generations.It should not, however, prevent Turkey and Armenia from approving the historic accords signed Saturday in Zurich to restore diplomatic ties and open their shared border. »»»»»


What Turkish FM Davutoglu Was Ready to Say After Protocol Signing

 “Today we are here as Turkey and Armenia to take an important step in embarking on a journey towards a new horizon of hope. This journey is long. This journey is fraught with difficulties. However, it is worth taking. This journey can only be made hand in hand with our partners present here, as well as all the peoples of the Caucasus.”

This is the opening paragraph of the statement that was purportedly to be read by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu after the protocol signing ceremony in Zurich this past Saturday. »»»»»


Yerevan Mayor’s Office Denies ARF Demonstration Permit

The ARF reports that its request to stage a demonstration in downtown Yerevan on October 16 has been denied by the Yerevan Mayor’s Office. The reason given is that another event is scheduled to take place on the same day, at the same time, and at the same location.

The permit request for a demonstration, to take place at 6 p.m. at the Charles Aznavour Square in the vicinity of Kino Moscow, was made on October 9.


Istanbul Armenians Generally Support the Protocols

They note, however, that the community has all been forgotten in the process.
