Book Launch for Armenian Version of David Phillips’ “Unsilencing the Past”

There will be a reception to launch the Armenian version of David Phillips’ “Unsilencing the Past: Track Two Diplomacy and Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation” (Berghahn Books, 2005), on Thursday, February 4, at 6pm at the Sil Plaza Hotel in Yerevan.

The book explains how the Turkish-Armenian Reconcilliation Commission (TARC) was created and the difficult task of bringing Armenians and Turks together. Mr. Phillips served as moderator on the commission. »»»»»


Obama Requests $40 Million in Assistance to Armenia

President Barack Obama’a newly revealed 2011 budget calls for $40 million in assistance to Armenia. This is $10 million more than his request for fiscal year 2010 but $1 million less than the total appropriated by the U.S. Congress last year.

The budget proposes maintaining Foreign Military Financing (FMF) assistance parity between Armenia and Azerbaijan, requesting $3.5 million for each country. »»»»»


HAK’s Zurabyan – “In this war, we must all be soldiers”

HAK representative Levon Zurabyan answered reporters’ questions at a press conference held today. Here’s a sampling of what he said.

If war breaks out, will you call on the people to participate or will you continue to make demands of the government?

We are a responsible force and national interests are of paramount importance. We will participate in the war effort. In such an event, regardless of what criminal is heading the government, all arguments are unacceptable. Naturally, after the war, our issues will be placed back on the table. »»»»»


Iran Reports Technical Defects Found in Tuploev-154 Crash

The head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization says technical defects have been found in the motor engine of a Tupolev-154 plane that crashed last July, killing all 168 passengers.

All the 168 people aboard the Tupolev Tu-154 en route to Armenia were killed about 16 minutes after the airliner took off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport near Tehran in July 2009. »»»»»


Citing Lack of Evidence, Charges Dropped Against HAK Activist

Claiming insufficient evidence to the contrary, a pre-examination unit has dropped charges against HAK activist Tigran Arakelyan.

The same unit also dropped criminal charges against Sahak Moradyan and Herbert Gevorgyan, two other activists indicted in the same case. »»»»»


Police Arrest 63 “Wanted” Individuals in January

The RoA Police reports that during last month, 63 individuals who were being sought for a variety of crimes ranging from murder to tax evasion were arrested in the country.

Fifteen were being sought by other countries.
