A Call for Help: Anahit Samvelyan Wants to Walk

Narek Aleksanyan

Yerevan resident Anahit Samvelyan (63) suffers from debilitating osteoarthritis that has confined her to a ninth-floor apartment she shares with her two children, Zara and Davit, and a widowed sister.

In Armenia, people with this disease are operated on for free, but the patient must pay for the prosthesis. The average cost of one prosthesis is US$4,000. The family doesn’t have the money. Ms. Samvelyan will become bedridden if the operation is delayed.

The family survives on state aid and pensions.

Anahit Samvelyan is asking for people's help to get the necessary prostheses for the surgery. Bank accounts have been opened for those wishing to help. If the operation is successful, another one is scheduled in six months.

Osteoarthritis is a difficult disease. While it has a high success rate, surgical treatment and hip replacement is not without risks or complications. Regardless of whether Ms. Samvelyan elects for the surgery or not, the procedure is best preceded by 2 months of conservative treatments and physiotherapy to strengthen the soft tissue (muscles, tendons) around the hip. Targeted exercises can help reduce pain and dysfunction at the site of injury.
