Armenian Court Extends Pre-Trial Detention of Azerbaijani Soldier

An Armenian court today decided to extend the detention of Husein Akhundov, one of the two Azerbaijani servicemen who illegally crossed the Armenian border on April 7,

Akhundov is accused of killing Hayrapet Meliksetyan, an employee of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine.

The 20-year-old defendant, at today’s closed-door trial at a Syunik court, stated that he’s a Baku native who was serving in Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic. Nakhichevan borders Armenia’s Syunik province.

In May, an Armenian court sentenced Agshin Gabili Babirov, the other Azerbaijani soldier caught on April 10 on the outskirts of the Armenian Syunik town of Sisian to eleven years and six months.

Babirov, also a Baku native, was found guilty of illegally entering Armenia, gun smuggling, theft, and issuing a death threat.

Baku claims the two Azerbaijani servicemen got lost "in adverse weather conditions and limited visibility".
