Acvtivists Say Arrests Not Enough to Save "Symphony of Stones"

The Trchkan Civil Initiative has written to the RA Chief of Police, urging him to organize a round-the-clock monitoring of the Symphony of Stones natural cliffs in the Garni Gorge.

The group says that despite the fact that several local residents were detained for questioning after the environmental activists circulated a video showing them hauling off the basalt stones, the problem is an ongoing one.

The Trchkan group says that activists have been sounding the alarm regarding the destruction of the site as far back as 2007.

They say that the mere detention of residents identified in the recent video is just a stop gap measure and that many others from the area have been guilty of cutting the stones for construction use.

The activists argue that the Symphony of Stones site must be registered as a natural wonder and protected by state agencies.
