ARF Fully Convinced it Made “Correct Decision” to Quit Coalition

20_03-a_rustamyanARF Deputy Armen Rustamyan, in a response to "Hetq", noted that the ARF participated in yesterday's closed door parliamentary advisory session on Armenian-Turkish relations and that the party was more convinced than ever that it took the right decision to quit the governing coalition. "The closed door session gave us the opportunity to debate the concerns we have in more detail and to present our questions and approaches. Naturally, we don't view the steps taken by the foreign ministry as anti-Armenian but our approaches diverge. The tactics and fundamental issues that we see confronting us also differ and the threats we see in all this are much more real," noted Mr. Rustamyan. As Deputy Rustamyan commented, the explanations given regarding the "road map" remind one more of a memorandum of intent but that these intentions weren't revealed. As to the call by the government for the ARF to withdraw its resignations, Mr. Rustamyan stated that the proposal would be studied at today's session of the party's supreme body. He commented that even if the proposal is accepted, "I, as a parliamentary committee president, will serve as a representative of the opposition and will be much more open and unencumbered regarding all issues." When asked by "Hetq" if the coalition's proposal came as a surprise, Mr. Rustamyan stated, "I can't say it was much of a surprise because the logic of our statement specifically noted that we maintain the field of cooperation, especially regarding state and national issues. Our position in the opposition will be directed at strengthening our nation to more effectively tackle the challenges it confronts." According to Mr. Rustamyan, the public will not be disheartened since the opposition and the government will work for the benefit of the country. "We have always been of the opinion that the opposition must have a place in the parliament so that its actions are of full value. It shouldn't seem strange to us that the opposition holds certain posts in the national assembly. It is good, that we create the basis for this," he concluded.
