Court Postpones “Haykakan Zhamanak” Slander Suit Appeal

08_06-melikbekyanToday, the RoA Appeals Court was scheduled to hear the appeal brought by the newspaper "Haykakan Zhamank" against Levon Kocharyan, the youngest son of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan. The appeal stems from an earlier slander suit that Levon Kocharyan had partially won against the newspaper back on June 5, 2009.However, Judge Nazaryan was forced to postpone today’s trial session till September 17 since Arpineh Melikbekyan, Levon Kocharyan’s attorney, could not oresent the court with any documentation validating her identity. According to the lower court’s decision, "Haykakan Zhamank" was required to refute allegations it had published that the former president’s younger son had been arrested by Dubai police for disturbing the peace while vacationing in the country around New Year’s last. The court had also ordered the paper to pay 3.6 million AMD in compensatory damages to Kocharyan.
