HAK's Shahnazaryan - Armenian Parliament Will Do Bidding of President Re:Protocols

12_05-d-shahnazaryanArmenian National Congress (HAK) representative Davit Shahnazaryan today stated that the Turkish press is reporting that the Armenia-Turkey protocols are scheduled to be signed by the leaders of the two countries on October 13 and that the documents would later be presented to the respective parliaments.Mr. Shahnazaryan said that there was no doubt that the Turkish parliament would link the enactment of the protocol provisions directly to a settlement of the Karabakh conflict, adding that the RoA National Assembly would follow the directives emanating from the presidential palace. The HAK representative said that if Turkish PM Erdogan directed the Turkish parliament to ratify the document it would do so as well. "But this will not happen. I believe that Erdogan will tell the parliament that he is interested in using the parliament to include the Karabakh settlement precondition to the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations and, in particular, to the opening of the border. I would think that the Armenian parliament would have enough sense to include the provision that this takes effect only after the ratification by the Turkish parliament. Sadly, I believe that the possibilities to correct or halt the process are limited," Mr. Shahnazaryan noted. Commenting on today’s hearings on the protocols organized by President Sargsyan, the HAK official sated that they shouldn’t be taken as a serious debate of the issue and that it’s just the next in a continuing series of non-political discussions that started after debates and political consultations begin in Turkey. Mr. Shahnazaryan also labelled the ARF attempts to introduce modifications to the proposals as "non-serious" and argued that ARF actions in general are mainly aimed at the internal power scene in Armenia."Because the ARF is aware that they will not even be taken as a ‘soft’ opposition force, these actions of theirs are directly aimed to avoid responsibility that the party has regarding Armenian-Turkish relations and the present situation in Karabakh," he argued. The HAK representative went even further, saying that the decades-old process conducted by the ARF towards Genocide recognition, is also a direct attempt by the party to avert or cloak its responsibility and share of guilt in the events of 1915.
