Hmayak Hovhannisyan - "I will campaign for Nikol Pashinyan"

Today, Hmayak Hovhannisyan, President of the Union of Political Analysts, stated at a press conference that if the Administartive Court decides against Nikol Pashinyan’s suit against the RoA Police Department, in which the jailed editor of "Haykakan Zhamanak" seeks an affidavit that he has resided in Armenia for the past five years, all candidates in the race for the 10th Parliamentary District should assemble at the newspaper offices and issue a statement that they all are pulling out of the election, scheduled for January 10, 2010. Mr. Pashinyan needs the residency affidavit to be eligible to get on the ballot. Mr. Hovhannisyan stated that all politicians, whether in the opposition or government, should voice their indignation over such illegal treatment of one of their colleagues. Mr. Hovhannisyan added that even if the court rules in favour of Mr. Pashinyan, he would call on the candidates to demand that the "Haykakan Zhamanak" editor not be kept in pre-trial custody. "I believe that any principled person should not campaign for the seat given the unequal conditions that presently exists. If Mr. Pashinyan is kept in custody and not able to freely launch a campaign, then I will take it upon myself to assume that responsibility. I will present Mr. Pashinyan’s opinions to the electorate. My principles do not allow me to do otherwise. I again state that come December 30, I will pull out of the race in favour of Mr. Pashinyan’s candidacy," Mr. Hovhannisyan declared.
