Heritage Party Board Prez - Armenian Authorities Will Concur to Land Concessions in Karabakh

14-09_A.MartirosyanArmen Martirosyan, Board President of the Heritage Party, held a press conference today, during which he noted that one should not expect much to result from yesterday’s meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Munich, Germany, regarding a settlement of the Karabakh conflict. The Heritage Party representative stated that they had pointed out at the time of the signing of the Armenia-Turkey protocols that the issue of Karabakh was implicitly included in the document and thus, since there are still major issues to be ironed out in terms of the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, the Armenian government will not sign off on any Karabakh document. “I think that we will have to wait until relations are normalized with Turkey before we see any movement on the Karabakh front,” Mr. Martirosyan stated. He argued that the major stumbling block is the return of the “liberated territories” and that the Armenian authorities are preparing for such a move. Mr. Martirosyan added that such an outcome was unacceptable for Heritage since the lands in question are an inseparable part of the NKR. Mr. Martirosyan pointed out that recently both Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu and Azerbaijani President Aliyev focused on the demographic situation in Armenia, with each saying that there wasn’t a sufficient population base in the country to settle the liberated lands. President Aliyev even mentioned a figure of 1.7 million as the current population of Armenia, arguing that the lands in question cannot be populated by Armenians if there are so few. Azerbaijan has always claimed that there are tens of thousands of its residents waiting to either return or resettle in Kelbajar, Kashatagh and the other territories. The Heritage Party official said that Armenian political leaders should heed the points raised by Turkey and Azerbaijan in this regard.
