Four members representing the "Hayk Student Union" of the Heritage Party held a press conference today regarding the statement released yesterday criticizing recent threats made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that he would resume hostilities if a settlement of the Karabakh conflict wasn’t reached soon. The Heritage Party activists claimed that while they disavow any military resolution of the conflict, they also deemed it prudent for Armenia to prepare for any such eventuality by Azerbaijan. One of the "Hayk" representatives, Gevorg Karapetyan stated, "We are opposed to war but if one comes we must be prepared to gie a good accounting of ourselves and respond in kind." Davit Sanasaryan, another "Hayk" official said that they issued yesterday’s statement, "Since we didn’t note any appropriate response to Aliyev’s statement or nthat of the Azerbaijani Defense Minister by Armenia." Mr. Sanasaryan noted that while the Minsk Group Co-chairs urge both sides to avoid such bellicose rhetoric after every such outburst made by the Azeri authorities, Armenia still has not responded in kind. He said that the response made by President Serzh Sargsyan’s Press Spokesperson, Mr. S. Farmanyan, was "weak".
