Protest Planned for Tomorrow at Yerevan State University

A demonstration is scheduled to take place tomorrow, outside the main campus of the Yerevan State University, to protest proposed cuts to the number of available slots for post-graduate and doctoral students seeking waivers from military service. Proposed legislation seeks to cut the number of such slots in half. Tomorrow’s demonstration will include students from various YSU faculties and students from the Yerevan State Economics University. The students plan to march to the Government Building after the rally. One of the student organizers of the protest, Daniel Ioanisyan, told Hetq that protest would only be called off if the cuts were tabled. "The last time around, the interests of some were satisfied but this time none of the organizers have any personal interest in the issue. 80% are females or students already registered as post-grad students. Others have received military deferments due to health reasons." The last scheduled protest never took place because Education Minister Armen Ashotyan had promised that cuts wouldn’t be made to the doctoral slots in the Physics Faculty. Cuts did however take effect at other faculties.
