Reporters Ani Gevorgyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramjyan Arrested

Ani Gevorgyan, reporter and photographer for Haykakan Jamanak (Armenian Times), her brother Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramjyan have been arrested.  Lawyer Lusine Sahakyan told Hetq that no charges had been presented as yet.   Ani Gevorgyan is suspected of violating the first section of article 316 of the Armenian Criminal Code – assaulting an officer of the law or a figure of authority. Sargis Gevorgyan and Davit Kiramjyan are suspected of acts of hooliganism.  According to Lusine Sahakyan, Ani was arrested at midnight and the young men at 3 am.  All three are in prison at this moment.  “The police acted violently while arresting them.  Within 72 hours they will either be released or I will go to court to demand their release,” said the lawyer. She noted that no evidence of Ani Gevorgyan’s guilt had been presented to her. We spoke to activist and eyewitness Tatev Poghpatyan, who said that, “The police had formed a human chain near Saryan’s statue and they would not let anyone through.  Ani was saying ‘I’m a reporter, let me through, let me take pictures,’ but nobody listened to her, they pushed and struck her.  We were then standing near the street when one of the policemen said, ‘Take that girl with the red dress away,’ and they hit her and dragged her away and wanted to take her camera.  They were even hitting her in the car, we could see it.” Tatev said that she had not seen Ani strike any police officer.  The Police told Hetq that official information about the arrested reporters would appear on their  official website shortly According to Haykakan Jamanak, Ani Gevorgyan’s main work had been to report on the operations of the police, which had caused the disapproval of Police Chief Alik Sargsyan.
