Freedom of Speech Violations Often Politically Motivated

According to a study presented at the "Freedom of Speech" assembly, convened by the RoA Human Rights Ombudsman, pressures brought to bear against reporters often are politically motivated. Mr. Harutyunyan stated, "This is borne out by the fact that pressure and violence goes up during elections campaigns. For a variety of objective and subjective reasons, many incidents of violations against reporters never are resolved." The study noted that when it comes to the issue of freedom of speech, the situation in Armenia today raises a number of concerns that must be tackled with a series of short and long-term measures. The Ombudsman pointed to necessary legislative reforms that would facilitate the removal of hindrances especially in the field of journalism.
