OSCE Says Donors Exist to Assist in Clean-Up of Nubarashen Toxic Site

Months ago the OSCE office in Armenia said the organization was willing to financially assist in the demolition of the Nubarashen toxic dump site, but that the amount wouldn’t be enough for the job. Mr. Karel Hofstra, Deputy Head of the OSCE Office, had stated at the time that new sources of international assistance had to be sourced. Hetq recently went back to ask him what measures had been taken in the interim. "We have a great mission ahead of us. We have great specialists but the resources are lacking. The OSCE has entered into an arrangement with the Ministry of Emergency Situations to source new international assistance. In this effort, we are in constant touch with the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, the European Union and others and are working on solutions," the OSCE official said. Mr. Hofstra told Hetq that the preliminary stage of study of the Nubarashen site was nearing completion. "I hope that by the end of the year we will have a better sense of the finances needed to resolve the issue. Afterwards, we will start to approach potential donors that have expressed an interest in helping Armenia."
