Alien Robots to the Rescue: Activists Enlist Polish Filmmakers to Save Old Zvartnots Terminal

A group of activists in Armenia opposed to the dismantling of the old Soviet era terminal at Zvartnots International Airport have turned to Polish filmmakers as allies in their struggle.

The unexpected move is based on the fact that in the late 1980s Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Gradowski used the airport terminal to shoot a scene for his science fiction fantasy film Mr. Blob in the Universe ("Pan Kleks w kosmosie").

The accompanying video shows a scene from the movie where the alien robots march under the Zvartnots terminal.

The activists, who operate under the name “We are the owners of this city”, in a statement issued today, say that European “experts” were shocked to hear of the plans to dismantle the terminal and will petition various European cultural heritage preservation  organizations to stop the destruction of the terminal.

The Armenian activists argue that the old terminal is a unique example of modern Armenian architecture worth preserving and that there is no legal basis to pull it down except as a cost-cutting measure.
