Parliament Speaker Tells Opposition MPs He Couldn't Turn Down Government's Request Re: Unfamiliar Bills

After leaving a closed door meeting with Armenian Parliamentary Speaker Galust Sahakyan to discuss the ire of non-coalition MPs over the fact that the government today introduced a number of bills they were seeing for the very first time, Heritage Party faction head Ruben Hakobyan told Hetq that the MPs told the speaker that they regarded the government’s move as intentional.

The non-coalition factions are arguing that the government wanted to push through a number of critical bills at today’s special session without any serious debate.

“Most of these bills need to be seriously discussed in committee. For the government to think that the bills will come up for a vote and be rubber stamped just because MPs aren’t fully familiar with them is wrong,” Hakobyan said.

When asked what explanations were provided by Sahakyan in the meeting, Hakobyan replied that the speaker merely said that the government regarded the bills as vital and that he [Sahakyan] couldn’t turn down the government’s request.
