Government Will Not Close Low Enrollment Schools in Border Communities

Minister of Education Arayik Harutyunyan has announced that the government will not close, or combine, schools with low enrollment numbers in the provinces of Vayots Dzor and Syunik.

Noting that such schools are located in villages located along the border, Harutyunyan says the school buildings will be used as community centers, housing a library, cultural center and pre-school.

The ministry’s website says Harutyunyan discussed the issue with school principals from the two provinces on August 25.

The minister is reported to have told the principals that the government would be discussing increasing teacher salaries when the 2019 state budget is drafted.
