Ambulance Called for Ex-General Manvel Grigoryan During Pre-Trial Detention Extension Hearing

Today’s court session reviewing whether to extend the pre-trial detention of retired Armenian Army General Manvel Grigoryan, charged with illegal arms and embezzlement, was cut short when the accused fell ill and was treated by emergency medical staff.

Arsen Mkrtchyan, Grigoryan’s lawyer, told reporters that his client isn’t receiving proper medical care while in detention. Ambulance staff said they saw no need to hospitalize the 62-year-old ex-general.

Grigoryan, who heads the Yerkrapah Union (an organization of army vets that promotes itself as a non-profit charity assisting vets and their families), was detained on June 19, three days after employees of the National Security Service (NSS) raided his Etchmiadzin home and a summer resort in Arshaluys, uncovering a large cache of weapons and boxes of donated medical and food supplies and clothing that were destined for Armenian troops during the April 2016 “Four Day War” on the Artsakh frontline.

Also found at Grigoryan’s summer house were boxes of supplies allocated by the Ministry of Defense and clearly marked “For Soldiers”, and not intended for resale.

Grigoryan’s defense team have consistently statement that the charges are a fabrication and that the ex-general suffers from a number of ailments.

Levon Baghdasaryan, another Grigoryan attorney, earlier claimed that his client is “held like a hostage and is being mistreated.”

Grigoryan, a resident of Etchmiadzin, also served as a Republican Party of Armenia MP.
