MP Ruben Hayrapetyan declared yesterday evening that he is givinh up his seat in Armenia’s National Assembly out of a sense of “moral responsibility” he feels over the June 17 beating of military physicians at the Harsnakar Restaurant he owns on the outskirts of Yerevan.

The Political Science Association of Armenia proposes that Ruben Hayrapetyan, in accordance with the Article 67 of the RA Constitution and the Article 13 of the RA Law on “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, resign his MP position on his own initiative, as well as put an end to his political activity.

Shirak Torosyan is an Armenian MP form the ruling Republican Party and President of the Javakhk Patriotic Union. Torosyan, who was born in Georgia, still cannot enter Georgia and calls this decision by Tbilisi authorities as incorrect and absurd.

For years I have heard nothing but complaints about the various clan leaders who enjoy immunity from prosecution and use their power positions in government to essentially do whatever they want, like terrorizing Armenian citizens and even having them killed as in the case of Tigran Avetyan. There is a video of Ruben Hayrapetyan on YouTube boasting about how he’s harassed and “punished” people, even some at gunpoint, so that he gets his way. But not all peer powerheads are so brazen as to admit committing such acts.
