Najarian Trial Prosecutor Demands 5 Year Sentence

As of May 6 of this year, mainly due to the machinations of the defense counsel, trial proceedings have been consecutively delayed. (See: George Najarians Lawyer Motions Court to Detain the Accused). Finally, on June 11th, the trial once again got underway.

Prosecutor Gevorg Yeremyan made the following statement regarding his call for a five year sentence:

“…The huge amount of evidence presented both during the preliminary investigation and the trial itself clearly and categorically proves the guilt of Grigor Igityan. By means of deceit and abusing the confidence of George Najarian, Grigor Igityan was able to take possession of the latter’s property, namely the photo shop located at Abovyan Street 32, Yerevan, and all the equipment therein, as well as the tracts of land and two buildings erected on said property located at #4 and #11/12 addresses in the “Dzoragyugh” ethnographic neighborhood…”

In the words of the Prosecutor, as a result of the above illegal acts the Najarians incurred losses of more than $682,000. At the same time the accused, Grigor Igityan, evaded paying accumulated taxes in the amount of 5.6 million drams. Thus Prosecutor Yeremyan motioned the court to seize these amounts from Igityan and to sentence him to five years imprisonment.

Attorney Hrayr Ghoukasyan, noted that if he hadn’t been the Najarians’ legal counsel, he would have sought the severest sentence for Grigor Igityan, and stated that:

“George and Carolann Najarian have always worked for the benefit of people and have never sought to punish anyone. Today, as the Najarians’ counsel, I am not requesting any specific punishment or length of sentence from the court. I am not doing so because my clients and I are convinced that, given the evidence presented, the verdict to be passed, as well as the sentence, will be just.”

In his closing remarks Attorney Ghoukasyan also underlined that compensation must include the return of all the Najarians’ property.

Kromvel Grigoryan, the defense attorney for the accused, requested a 30 day adjournment in order to prepare his rebuttal. Judge Vardanyan granted an adjournment of 20 days. The next trial date is set for July 30th.
