The Son of the General/Parliamentary Deputy Cannot be Punished

After being beaten and horribly tortured in Etchmiadzin on March 13th, 23 year-old Sepuh Karapetyan died. His only ‘crime’ was that he dared to defend one of the neighborhood girls from the person who had been bullying her around. That person was Zarzand Saroyan, the son of Seyran Saroyan who is an Army General and a member of the National Assembly.

A friend of the slain Sepuh, who wished to remain anonymous, relates that, “Sepuh, his brother and another pal called up the General’s son to tell him that his advances towards the girl weren’t welcomed.” This friend notes that what transpired was a fight in which knives were whipped out. In self-defense, one of Sepuh’s friends wounded Zarzand with a knife. The group fled the scene, not wishing for things to get uglier. The Etchmiadzin police have brought criminal charges against Sepuh’s brother.

The same day, General Saroyan, who was in Moscow, heard about the incident by telephone and issued his directive as to what should be done. Buoyed by his father’s order, the younger Saroyan, along with General’s bodyguards, began to turn the town of Etchmiadzin upside-down in order to locate those who dared to raise a finger against him and exact the appropriate degree of revenge. Sepuh and two of his friends fell into the clutches of Zarand who, along with his retinue of eight bodyguards, proceeded to teach the three youths a very ‘bloody lesson’.

“When they found Sepuh’s body it was very badly beaten and showed torture marks. His shoes and socks had been removed so that they could beat his bare feet to a pulp. His legs had turned white from the blows. His hands had been pierced by some sharp implement in a fashion similar to the nails driven through the hands of Jesus. You couldn’t even fix your eyes on the guy’s head and neck, so horrible were the wounds.” relates one of Sepuh’s friends whose name we cannot divulge for understandable reasons. According to Sepuh's relatives his other two friends were also savagely beaten. They went into hiding after the incident out of fear of further reprisal.

A forensic team in Yerevan examined the body of the 23 year-old. “However they tried to conceal the beating and torture traces on the body they couldn’t because the wounds were too deep.” says a person who attended the burial procession. This person also relates that Sepuh’s relatives had decided to place the coffin containing his body in the square in the middle of Etchmiadzin as a sign of protest and to demand that the guilty be brought to justice. “But they thought better of it in the end.” says this same individual. He painfully related to us that the slain boy’s parents are very fearful for their eldest son who is now being hunted down by the police and by the thugs in Zarand’s gang who remain free to this day.

Let us remind our readers that one year ago General Saroyan’s same son ran over two 10 year-old boys with his car. As a result, one of the youngsters died and the other was crippled for life.
