Moscow Cinema Burglary: Did Cops "Beat Out" Guilty Pleas?

On January 10, 2010, a cash safe at the Moscow Cinema in Yerevan was allegedly broken into.

The thieves were said to have gotten away with more than 5 million AMD and 10,000 Russian rubles.

The trial of the two men charges with the burglary, 25 year-old Vahram Kerobyan and 29 year-old Stepan Hovakimyan, is still dragging on in the courts today.

The Moscow Cinema administration waited one month to report the theft to the police and a criminal investigation was only launched on February 6.

The very same day Stepan was taken into custody and his friend Vahram was arrested a short time later.

Moscow Cinema Director Martin Adoyan had told Hetq that he delayed reporting the crime to the cops because the safe had been opened with a key and that, being an “inside job”, he wanted to give the burglars a chance to return the money and not face jail time.

Adoyan says that when he saw that the burglars weren’t about to return the stolen money he went to the police.

In fact, it turns out that the police knew about the break-in from the start.

On January 11, the cops took Stepan and a ticket seller named Gohar (Stepan’s girl;friend) in for questioning.

Police Investigator Tigran Kirakosyan supervised the questioning.

Stepan remained in police custody for 20 days and he claims that he was physically and mentally abused by the cops to sign a guilty confession.

Stepan’s father, Beniamin Hovakimyan, claims that it was only after prying a guilty confession from his son that the police telephoned the Moscow Cinema and told them that they could now officially report the crime.

Stepan has always claimed that he had nothing to do with the break-in.

It was only after the case received wide coverage in the Armenian press did the Police Department’s Internal Security Division issue an investigation into the charges made by Stepan that he was literally “beaten” into making a confession of guilt.

Stepan’s lawyer, Tigran Safaryan, says that many independent witnesses, including employees at the Moscow Cinema, can verify the fact that his client was picked up the day after the break-in.

At the request of Hetq, attorney Vahe Grigoryan commented on the murky chain events by stating that, in essence, money seems to be more important than the rights of those detained.

“In the drive to get the money back, the entire system can close its eyes regarding physical and mental abuse inflicted on individuals,” said Grigoryan.

Efforts by Stepan’s lawyer to launch a criminal case of the abuse his client was subjected to at the hands of the police have been fruitless.

Safaryan has now taken the case to the Appeals Court, providing a detailed account of the demands made by the European Court and the Committee to Prevent Cruelty in the matter.
