Sevan’s Clogged Sewers: 1 Billion AMD Needed in Repairs, New Construction

Diana Ghazaryan, Saro Baghdasaryan

There are 213 multi-residential buildings in the town of Sevan.

In 85, the sewer systems are in serious disrepair.

Sevan’s municipal government claims that it’s currently repairing the sewers in the other buildings

The municipality says it will take some 1 billion AMD to get all the sewer systems in working order.

There are seven real estate boards in Sevan tasked with maintaining the buildings, most constructed in the Soviet-era.

The municipality says these boards are responsible for repairing the sewage systems, but that, in an emergency, it lends a helping hand.

Sevan’s local government told Hetq that it can’t specify a specific deadline for resolving the problem since it all depends on the availability of funds.

Maintaining water lines and sewage systems before entering residential buildings has been handed over to the Veolia Water (Djur) company.

The company claims to have repaired 891 breakdowns during the first eight months of this year. Veolia Water says it’s inherited a nightmare from the prior water utility, Armenian Water and Sewerage.
