The Manukyans of Goght: Beekeepers Thinking of Leaving

The hardships of village life have finally taken a toll on Atom and Hasmik Manukyan.

The couple, longtime beekeepers in the picturesque Kotayk village of Goght, are preparing to leave for greener pastures abroad. But they first have to sell their house, says Hasmik, noting that it would be a tough sell.

Mr. Manukyan tells me that it’s possible to raise a family on a beekeeper’s income if one does it full time and tends to 50-60 beehives, adding that most households in Goght are beekeepers.

“I’m thinking of going to Krasnodar. I’d have ten or so beehives on the side. We’d live,” Manukyan says.
