The village of Pemzashen was founded in 1915 by Genocide survivors from Mush and Basen. During the Soviet period the village was transformed into an appealing community based on the resources of the developing industry. The sewing factory, construction material plant and the parts factory for hydro-electric stations offered ample work to all residents. Mr. Arshak Banuchyan, Deputy Director of the Matenadaran, has been arrested. Mr. Banuchyan is responsible for the Ancient Manuscript Depository’s Division of External Relations. He is also the Founding President of the “Friends of the Matenadaran” charitable organization. He has been accused of “participating in the mass public disorders” of March 1st. Sona Truzyan, Press Secretary at the Public Prosecutor’s office, made a statement to this effect on March 25th.

The internal political crisis in Armenia was intensified following the presidential elections held on February 19, 2008. On February 29th, just hours before the bloody events were to unfold, Armenian TV. had been constantly bombarding its viewers with the footage of newly elected President Serzh Sargsyan and Artur Baghdasaryan, leader of the “Orinats Yerkir” (Rule of Law Party), congratulating each other with champagne toasts.

In the wee hours of the morning of March 1st, Gagik Shamshyan, a photojournalist for the papers Chorrord Ishkhanutyun and Aravot, was in Freedom Square. He had decided to do a photo story about how the people at the sit-in were preparing to greet the first day of spring. However, the police who had arrived to disperse the crowd wound up severly beating the photographer.

The State of Emergency in Yerevan decreed by the President of Armenia ends today. For twenty days public rallies were prohibited and for all intensive purposes there was no working oppositional mass media. The society was forced to listen to the one-sided news of the government and the pro-government media outlets. Widespread arrests of the supporters of former presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrosyan continue unabated.

The Abovyan Criminal Detention Center is the only prison in Armenia for women and minors. There are currently 126 women here, ages ranging from 19 to 77 years old. 36 of them are detainees. The remaining 90 are convicts, serving their sentences in this prison.

Of all the television channels operating in Armenia, Gyumri’s GALA (Gyumri Independent Journalists’ Channel) was the only one to broadcast Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s September 21 speech in its entirety. As a result, the television station is being subjected to all sorts of pressure from state organs to this day, has lost advertisers, and is being inspected closely by the State Tax Department (STD).

"It's just that we have a few repeat offenders or people with long sentences, who approach convicts new to the 'zone' and tell them, 'Sister, we know how things are here and we'll tell you what to do and how to do it,' and then they eat the food given to that new convict," said the Detention Center head, "Those are the cunning ones. But the new convicts usually adapt quickly and learn to avoid them."

The Court of First Instance of the Shengavit District sentenced Gayane Melkonyan and Susanna Nikoghosyan to five and two years imprisonment respectively on January 31 of this year. In 2004 and 2005, they had gathered a group of Armenian girls whom they tricked and sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey to work as prostitutes. Melkonyan and Nikoghosyan, however, had started their work much earlier.

During the Soviet era, Azeris exclusively inhabited the village of Nrnadzor, located in the Syunik marz. At the time the village was called Nyuvadi and straddled the border with Iran and Azerbaijan. With the outbreak of the Artsakh war, Armenian forces were able to liberate this Armenian settlement. Today it borders both Iran and the Republic of Nagorno- Karabakh.

As the do every year, the residents of Vahan went this August 30 to the memorial built for their fallen villagers. Some of the village youth had then decided to go to the lake, leaving behind their work in their fields.
