BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, is under investigation for alleged corrupt practices leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the New York Times reported Wednesday. BHP is accused of providing inducements and gifts to Chinese government officials and executives in the steel industry in an attempt to gain an unfair, and illegal, business advantage.

This is a response to the recent “Call for Urgent Measures for Ensuring the Legitimacy of Electoral Processes in Armenia” put out by a group of NGOs including the Transparency International Anti-corruption Center and the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office. While I agree that their suggested electoral reforms are good, almost none of the suggestions will ensure public trust and a sense of legitimacy in the government.

For all those brave souls that are actually considering heeding the president’s call and do not have “friends” in the highest of places in the government of Armenia, I simply offer a story which should give some pause.
