Some of the merchants at Stepanakert’s central market wound up there after the Artsakh War with the closure of certain factories and other manufacturing operations. Craftspeople, who had worked in the fabric, shoe, carpet and other factories, as well as people in the restaurant trade, started earning a living in the market. Joining the ranks of these experienced traders at the market are villagers from throughout Artsakh with their crops and other goodies. Some prefer to sell their goods all at once, at cheap prices, to local sellers. Others sell their goods themselves. Those hawking their wares say the market is disappearing due to the mini-markets cropping up in residential backyards in the Artsakh capital. As a result, most customers at the central market are tourists and merchants make money on a seasonal basis.
