When a Hospital Needs “Emergency Care”

The hospital in the town of Etchmiadzin was built in 1972 and hasn’t undergone major renovations since. Much of the medical equipment is decades old. The hospital serves the town of Etchmiadzin and surrounding villages – an overall population of some 120,000. The authorities have always claimed there is no money to modernize the hospital. Estimates place the cost of renovating the hospital at 800 – 900 million AMD (US$1.8 million). Despite these conditions, patients say the staff is attentive and professional. No wonder the hospital has survived this long.
