Yerevan's Chief Architect Meets with Residents Opposing Nalbandian Street Construction

14:43, February 2, 2012

The Chief Architect of the Yerevan Municipality, Narek Sargsyan, yesterday met with residents living near the construction site on Nalbandian Street in Yerevan. Also present was Heritage Party MP Anahit Bakhshyan, a lawyer for the residents and the head of the construction company.

Also on hand, was the head of the Yerevan Municipality’s Department of the Environment.

Residents are opposed to the construction of a high-rise residential building in their backyard. The municipality has stated that it will not allow a 16 story building at the site.

Narek Sargsyan promised residents that a new play area would be built and that a 3,000 square meter park would be installed.

Some residents, who were evicted from the old private homes in the area and who have been promised new apartments in the building going up, said they are for the construction. Others, living in the surrounding apartment houses, still have reservations.

Narek Sargsyan also told residents that the developer is also obliged to build a new kindergarten to replace the old one that was razed.

It now remains for the Yerevan Municipality to issue a decision giving the go-ahead for a seven story building on the Nalbandian site.
