19:32, February 3, 2012The newspaper Haykakan Zhamanak has declared that yesterday’s arrest of reporter Hayk Gevorgyan was a result of his journalistic activities and not due to some traffic accident as announced by the police.
The newspaper claims that Gevorgyan had been showing up for work on a regular basis ever since the alleged January 23 traffic incident and had even been driving the car in question.
Haykakan Zhamanak also says that Gevorgyan had told the police that he would be more than willing to show up for questioning if were sent a legal summons to that effect.
The paper says that reporter Gevorgyan got on the bad side of the police when he participated at a January 12 press conference with RA Police Chief Vova Gasparyan and directed some sharp questions to the top cop.
Haykakan Zhamanak is demanding the immediate release of Hayk Gevorgyan and vows to continue its campaign to uncover corruption and governmental excesses.
