15:33, February 8, 2012A public oversight group that took a look at prisons and other penal institutions in Armenia last year states that it uncovered a slate of evidence suggesting serious violations of human rights and other irregularities.
The group had sent its findings to the RA Ministry of Justice and has recommended immediate action to remedy the situation.
At today’s roundtable discussion of the report’s findings, at which group observers and ministry officials were present, Committee member and attorney Edmon Maroukyan stated that the group wasn’t satisfied with the measures to date taken to improve the situation.
Deputy Minister of Justice Nikolay Aroustamyan confessed that problems remained and that new, system-wide measures were called for.
Aroustamyan called on the group and other organizations to work jointly with the ministry in this regard.
