14:01, February 22, 2012To mark International Mother Language Day 2012, the Turkish website bianet published articles in 20 different languages spoken in Turkey today. Many of them are on the verge of disappearing and have been included in the UNESCO World Atlas of Languages in Danger.
What is interesting is that both Western Armenian and Homshestma, a dialect of Western Armenian spoke by the Hopa Hamshentsis, are categorized by UNESCO as “definitely endangered”.
Some of the other endangered languages in Turkey are Hértevin, Laz, Pontic Greek, Turoyo and Zazaki.
Here are excerpts of the Hamshen and Western Armenian languages appearing in bianet.
