Portuguese Coach: "Our goal is the same, to beat France or Spain"

Czech national football coach Michal Bilek was philosophical about their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Portugal yesterday.

“We’re disappointed and were looking forward to playing in the semi-finals. But we were up against a strong team and were able to create a number of scoring chances nevertheless,” said Bilek after the match.

Bilek said that their reinforced defense was able to withstand the Portuguese attacks during the first half of play but that fatigue took its toll in the second.

“Had you asked me two and a half years ago when I took over as coach if we had a chance to make it to the quarter finals, I would have said no way,” Bilek said.

Portuguese coach Paulo Bento said his squad controlled play throughout and were constantly pressing their opponents.

As to their upcoming opponent in the semi-finals, Bento said it didn’t matter who they played.

“In the semi-finals of such a competition you can expect your opponent to be powerful with high quality players. Right now we have to regain our strength. Our aim is the same, to beat either Spain or France.”
