Turkey and France Promise to “Open New Page” in Relations

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan invited French President François Hollande to make an official state visit to Turkey when the two met in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday at the United Nations Rio 20 summit.

Erdoğan is reported to have noted that the last time a French president had made such a trip to Turkey was twenty years ago.

Hollande is said to have reacted positively to the invitation.

The two leaders agreed to open a new page in their bilateral relations, particularly economic relations, and contribute to Turkey's European Union membership bid.

Turkey had imposed sanctions on France after the National Assembly passed a bill in December making a denial of the 1915 Armenian Genocide a crime.
