Conflicting Sentiments Voiced by Parents of Aleppo Armenian Children Flown to Armenia

On Tuesday, two small planes took the last group of Armenians kids from Aleppo to the safety of Armenia.

But children from the Armenian National Shelter in Aleppo weren’t in the group. They couldn’t get the necessary passports due to the situation on the ground.

The shelter, or refuge, as it’s called has been a community institution for many long years, taking in kids from broken families or those without parents. Many of the children at the shelter are just poor.

I just wonder if the Armenian government couldn’t have done something to get these deprived children passports so that they could have been brought to Armenia.

Many other deserving children like them also couldn’t get a passport. The Armenian passport office in Aleppo has stopped functioning because it’s located in an area that the site of fierce battles between the opposing camps.

Those lucky enough to have gotten a passport wait outside the Armenian centers in Aleppo for the bus ride to the airport.

Usually the ride only takes 15 minutes but given the present situation, the buses leave several hours before the flights are scheduled to take off.

The experienced drivers have to make route changes as they go to avoid driving into the midst of a running street battle.  The buses can also be stopped by insurgents and army alike for questioning.

Hundred of cell phone calls between parents, kids and community organizers track the progress of the buses and the eventual flight to Yerevan.

No one can predict how this all will develop in the coming days and weeks.

But many Armenians are rooting for a victory by the Syrian Army. They’re afraid of the uncertainty that would follow a collapse of the Assad regime. Then too, there’s the extremist Islamist factor to ponder.

For now, the parents of those kids who have left for Armenia are caught in a psychological bind.

On the one hand they are glad that their children are in a safe place.

But they still wonder – what will happen if their sons and daughters won’t be able to return?
