Armenians of Norway Protest in Front of the Embassy of Hungary in Oslo

Oslo, Norway - Armenians of Norway gathered on Monday, September 3, to protest in front of the embassy of Hungary in Norway. They demanded an apology for the extradition of Azerbaijani convicted murderer Ramil Safarov who was serving life sentence in Hungary and arestoration of justice.

A protest letter was handed to his Excellency Ambassador Geza Jeszenszky, who assured that it will reach his government.

Copies of the letter have been sent to Mr Jonas Gahr Store, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Mr. Janos Herman, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union, Mr. Helge Lund, President and CEO of Statoil. The full text of the protest letter is available on Armenian Cultural Association of Norway’s website at www.Armenia.no

Ambassador Jeszenszky agreed to receive two representatives to discuss the protestors’ concerns. His Excellency extended his personal sympathies towards the Armenians and their concerns to the representatives of the protestors. He expressed his government’s disappointment with Azerbaijan’s actions and called it cheating. His Excellency handed a copy of the letter of the deputy minster of justice of Azerbaijan with assurances of proper handling of Safarov upon extradition, as well as a copy of his Foreign Ministry’s press release, about Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zsolt Nemeth’s meeting with Vilayat Guliyev, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador, who was called to his office on Sunday to inform him about the position of the Hungarian Government and hand over a diplomatic note to the Ambassador.

The diplomatic note stated that Azerbaijan’s actions were in sharp contrast with the assurance received earlier from the Deputy Minister of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan in his letter of 15 August 2012, addressed to the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice of Hungary. In this letter the Republic of Azerbaijan, quoting the relevant international Convention, undertook that the sentenced person will serve the remaining part of his prison sentence in the Republic of Azerbaijan and may be released on conditional parole only after he has served at least 25 years of his sentence

This step has not only endangered the peace process mediated between Azerbaijan and Armenia by OSCE Minks Group co-chairs, but also threatens further escalation and the possible outbreak of armed confrontation in the already fragile region.

There has not been any reactions from Norwegian government. The Ambassador of Armenia to Denmark and Norway, H.E. Hrachya Aghajanyan, through ABC Nyheter daily, expressed hopes for reactions from Norwegian society and authorities, to such an unacceptable step, which undermines respect for law, human rights and human dignity.
