Trial of “March 1st” Defendant Grigor Voskerchyan Postponed

Today’s scheduled trial session in the case of former Abovyan mayor Grigor Voskerchyan was postponed. Mr. Voskerchyan, along with RoA National Assembly Deputy Sasun Mikayelyan, is the only two of the original “March 1st Seven” defendants still in detention. Deputy Mikayelyan has been sentenced to 8 years by the Kotayak Regional Court.

Mr. Voskerchyan is on trial for organizing mass public disturbances in the wake of last year’s hotly contested presidential elections.

Today’s trial had to be postponed because Mr. Voskerchyan was never transferred to the court from his detention facility. It seems that the military police unit that had been charged with the responsibility of transferring the defendant was recently abolished by reform legislation.

Several trials in recent days have had to be postponed due to the fact that no one is sure who is now responsible for transferring defendants in custody to the courts.

Showing up at today’s trial were former “March 1st” detainees Alexander Arzumanian, a former RoA foreign minister, Deputy Myasnik Malkhasyan and Suren Sirounyan, all of whom were recently released under the general amnesty.
