Nikol Pashinyan in Court; Faces Possible Pre-Trial Detention

At this moment, Judge Edik Avetisyan is reviewing the motion of Vahagn Harutyunyan, who heads the Special Investigative Service and Inspector Vaghinak Mkrtchyan, requesting that “Haykakan Zhamanak” Chief Editor Nikol Pashinyan be given pre-trail detention. The hearing is taking place at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court.

Mr. Pashinyan, an opposition leader affiliated with the HAK alliance, turned himself in at the General Prosecutor’s Office yesterday after more than a year of being on the run from authorities in the wake of last year’s post-presidential election disturbances.

According to a statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Pashinyan has been arrested. The decision to take Mr. Pashinyan into custody had been reached more than a year ago when a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

Mr. Pashinyan is being defended by a team of four attorneys – Tigran Atanesyan, Ara Zakaryan, Artur Grigoryan and Tigran Muradyan.
