Former Foreign Minister: Pashinyan Verdict Continuation of the Political Persecutions

Former RoA Foreign Minister Alexander Arzumanian described the recent seven year sentence of Nikol Pashinyan as “a continuation of the witch hunts and political persecutions” that began after the presidential elections of 2008 and that the court’s verdict had nothing to do with the events of March 1st.

Mr. Arzumanian recounted, at a press conference today, that he and his colleagues indicted in the so-called “March 1st Seven Case”, were charged according to a document signed on February 24, 2008 by the National Security service. He pointed to this fact as proof that the government was monitoring displays of public protest after the elections.

“None of this had anything to do with March 1,” Mr. Arzumanian stated, adding that the authorities merely sought to conceal the identities of those truly guilty of the massacre that took place on that day.

“There is absolutely no justice served in this country. There is no independent judiciary. I have no idea what Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan was thinking when he added a year to the sentence demanded by the prosecution. You would have to ask those who issued the directive to the judge,” the former foreign minister concluded.
