Deputy Chairman of RoA Parliament – Rapprochement with Turkey a Matter of National Security

The Deputy Chairman of the RoA National Assembly Samvel Nikoyan stated today that he viewed Armenian-Turkish relations in a national security context and that if relations between the two nations are normalized “threats emanating from Turkey will be lessened.”

DC Nikoyan said that normalization would lead to the creation of a beneficial foundation in the region that might usher in a pro-Armenian outcome of the Karabakh conflict settlement. Mr. Nikoyan made his remarks at press conference in Yerevan.

He added that presently, Turkey takes a pro-Azerbaijani stance in all international forums and that Ankara provides Baku with material, moral and military assistance. DC Nikoyan argues that this might change after relations are normalized and that Turkey might well refrain from adopting such a one-sided approach.

Commenting on the ratification of the Protocols recently sent to the Armenian parliament, DC Nikoyan pointed out three possible scenarios. The first would be that the ratification process proceeds in tandem in both nations; the second, that Armenia waits for Turkey to ratify; and third, that Armenia continues to take the initiative on the matter.
