Armenian Academy's 4 Volume Dictionary & Donigian's 2 Volume Western Armenian Dictionary Now Online

The web-site Nayiri.com today released digitized versions of the 4- volume Explanatory Dictionary of Contemporary Armenian (published by the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in Yerevan between 1969-1980) and the 2-volume New Dictionary of the Armenian Language (published by Donigian printing house in 1992 in Beirut)Both dictionaries are presented in their entirety and are searchable by headword.

With about 125,000 headwords, the Academy dictionary (Ժամանակակից Հայոց Լեզվի Բացատրական Բառարան) is as yet the most comprehensive Eastern Armenian dictionary written in the reformed Armenian orthography.

Similarly, the Donigian dictionary (Հայոց Լեզուի Նոր Բառարան) is among the most comprehensive Western Armenian dictionaries, with about 56,000 headwords.

The project was made possible by the financial support of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Association (www.hamazkayin.com).

Digitized versions of Stepan Malkhasiants' Armenian Explanatory Dictionary (1944), Hrachia Ajarian's Armenian Etymological Dictionary (1926), Edward Aghayan's Modern Armenian Explanatory Dictionary (1976), and Ashot Sukiasyan's Armenian Thesaurus (1967) are also available on the site.

Since 2005, Nayiri.com provides electronic tools for the Armenian language, including freely accessible Armenian explanatory and bilingual dictionaries in both Western and Eastern Armenian. In 2010, Nayiri.com partnered with HySpell to provide the most comprehensive Armenian spell-checker for traditional Armenian orthography that includes a lexicon base of 156,000 words and over 5 million inflected forms. Nayiri.com is a free service which relies on the sponsorship of philanthropists, educational foundations, and all those concerned with the longevity of the Armenian language.
