Samvel Karapetyan: 'Armenians act more like tenants, not owners, of their homeland'

In his blog, Armenian architecture historian Samvel Karapetyan liked Armenians to renters rather than owners of their homeland.

Karapetyan, who heads the Yerevan branch of the NGO Research on Armenian Architecture (RAA), credited this approach of Armenians to the homeland as a deficiency of the public education system in Armenia.

Delving deeper into the themes of national awareness, Karapetyan said he was opposed to Sunday Armenian language classes in the diaspora.

“The child, unlike his peers who are out playing on that day, has to go to those classes because he or she is Armenian. At such a young age and far from an understanding of our national issues, the child gets the impression that he or she is quite unlucky for being Armenian,” argued Karapetyan.

Karapetyan says the child thinks that it would be better if he or she wasn’t Armenian so that they could play with their friends as we.

“There must be a psychological approach in this case,” Karapetyan argued, adding that such schools could actually repel kids from their Armenian identity.
