Gyumri Knife Stabber: Says He "Wants to Go Home"; Gets 13 Years Instead

Haroutyun Haroutyunyan, charged with the June 15, 2012 stabbing to death of 77 year-old Roza Khachatryan in Gyumri, told the court today that he was crazy and wanted to go home.

“My nerves can’t take being locked up anymore. I want to go home,” said Haroutyunyan repeatedly.

At a previous court session, Haroutyunyan said the elderly woman had insulted him on the street and that he stabbed her with a kitchen knife ten times.

Khachatryan was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Prosecutor Vagharshak Mkhitaryan labelled the act very dangerous for society. Haroutyuyan is said to have learning disabilities but a court psychologist deemed him mentally competent nevertheless. Mkhitaryan asked for a sentence of 13 years.

Tamara Melkonyan, the defendant’s lawyer, asked the court to show leniency, arguing that her client was suffering from nervous condition and wouldn’t survive conditions in prison.

After a brief recess, Judge Manoukyan found Haroutyunyan guilty and sentenced him to twelve years.
