Striking Students Persevere; Small but Vocal Opposition Demand they Leave

Sona Simonyan

Student strikers this morning assembled on the sidewalk opposite the main entrance to Yerevan State University in the hopes of rallying more students to their cause.

They were met by students from inside the university who demanded that they leave immediately since they were disrupting classes and had no business fomenting a public disturbance.

A large unit of police were on hand but scuffles broke out between the two groups nevertheless.

The striking students then made their way to the Institute of Economic up the block.

There too, the strikers were met with a small group of students who demanded that they leave them in peace.

Police stepped in to defuse a potentially explosive situation.

The activists then walked to the State Medical University, where police and dissenting students were waiting as well.

At every stop, the strikers called on students inside to join them. When met with boos and calls to leave, the strikers responded, “We love you”.

This elicited perplexed gazes from the opposition.

During the march, the strikers handed out leaflets listing the names and phone numbers of attorneys offering legal services to students facing possible disciplinary action for participating in the walk-out.

The strikers later made their way to Mashtots Park.
