Dr Olav Tveit and Dr Guy Liagre The General Secretaries of World Council of Churches and Conference of European Churches

On the occasion of coincidence of Christ's Resurrection Day and Genocide Remembrance Day in 2011 I sent a letter to the world's spiritual leaders calling  them to recall during the Easter liturgy on April 24 one and a half million Armenians massacred for their faith during the Armenian Genocide in 1915 organized by the Turkish government.

I express my profound respect and reverence for your response to my letter.

This year on April 24 marks the 98th anniversary of this greatest crime organized  by Turkish government which has not yet accepted its guilt as a result of which the survivals of the genocide scattered all over the world to form the Armenian Diaspora. The ancient Armenian residences and our cultural heritage remained to the Turkish government. But the main target of Ottoman Turkey was the faith of the nation, first in the world to adopt Christianity as the state religion. And they make bold to call us not Armenians but “giaour” which in their language means “faithless”.

The Armenian people paid with their lives for devotion to their faith in Christ.

With greatest respect and admiration, I ask for your support to apply to the spiritual leaders of the Christian world to deliver their speech condemning the crime committed by Turkish government.

That pleasurable call, though deplorable for us, will remind to the whole world of the God's first commandment “Thou shalt not kill”. On the threshold of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide the world's religious leaders will pay tribute with their speech to the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” so favorable for humanity but disregarded with indescribable brutality against humankind. Thus, the spiritual and temporal powers will be reminded that to keep silent about the committed crime and not to condemn it is a crime in itself which will always threaten the world community’s peaceful existence.
