Safety Specialist Can't Cite Oldest Amusement Ride Operating in Armenia

Lousineh Hovhannisyan, who works for the National Center for Technical Safety attached to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, told reporters today that none of the 126 amusement rides now operating in Armenia have failed their inspections.

Amazingly, almost 70% of the rides were built over twenty years ago in the Soviet period.

83 of the country’s 126 amusement rides are located in Yerevan. There are six in Kotayk, nine in Lori, nineteen in Shirak and nine in Syunik.

Hovhannisyan claimed that the average life of the rides is forty years (for those with an average speed of 0.3-0.5 meters per second) and 35-50 years depending on the height, complexity and free fall range of the rides.

Surprisingly, the technical safety specialist, was at a loss to specify which of the current crop of amusement rides was the oldest.
