Armenian Men in 3rd Place, Women in 2nd, at European Chess Championship

With their 2.5 – 1.5 over Russia, Armenia’s men’s team hold third place at the European Team Chess Championship in Warsaw.

Armenia’s top player Levon Aronian scored a draw with Aleksander Grishchik, while Vladimir Hakobyan, on the third board, also drew with his Russian opponent, Aleksander Morozwvich.

Playing the white pieces, Armenia’s Sergey Movsisyan drew with Pyotr Svidler. Gabriel Sargsyan, playing the white pieces, beat Yevgeny Tomashevski.

France and Azerbaijan, the other top teams, played to a 2-2 draw.

After seven rounds, Armenia has won five games, drawn one, and lost one.

France leads with 13 points, followed by Azerbaijan in second place.

Later today, the Armenian men take on France. Azerbaijan will play fourth place Greece.

Armenia’s women’s team, which beat Poland 3-1, is now in second place after Ukraine.
