Angered by plans to build a third mini hydro plant in their community, Marts village residents and outside environmental activists blocked a section of the Marts-Vanadazor highway.

Activist Babken Der-Grigoryan told Hetq said the blockade aimed to attract attention to the issue.

The demonstrators demanded that all construction on the plant be halted.

Even before police arrived on the scene, the sixty or so protestors had reopened the road and left.

In an ironic twist of fate, Der-Grigorian couldn’t rule out the possibility that the police were caught in the traffic back-up caused by the road closure.
